I'm not sure if I would extend too much to how the choice of the candidate would reflect their work style, it may be more of an indicator of what kind of time they have. Assuming all candidates have infinite time, it may let you infer more, but if someone is involved in multiple processes, some with homework assignments, they may just have something they can share or have limited time to do another if given a choice.
What do you think of the 'choose your own adventure' style interview?
For example giving the candidate an option between
1.) A typical leetcode/hacker rank style algorithm question
2.) A more practical and realistic problem you'd encounter in a project
3.) Candidate brings their own repo and the interviewers shadow the candidate while they work on something
I read an article about this idea and have been interested to see how it would play out in the real world. It seems like the candidates choice could even provide insight into what kind of worker they might be.
1.) Willing to grind for hours on similar problems
2.) Confident their work experience can speak for itself
I'm a fan and have embraced the choose your own adventure method in the past. see: https://kevingoldsmith.substack.com/p/changing-hiring-practices-to-build
